Vyacheslav Bondarenko

Vyacheslav Bondarenko is an economist and sociologist with work experience as an economic analyst at various maritime shipping companies in the City of London.

At the DSM, he is pursuing his PhD project with the title “Across the Ocean to Enrich the Few: Container Shipping Industry and Uneven Development”.

Working within the world-system approach and utilising the insights from theories of uneven geographical development, his project aims to analyse the relationship between globalisation and container shipping industry. Instead of portraying container shipping as a passive servant of globalisation and seeing it only as a derivative of economic tendencies, Vyacheslav studies the role of the global container shipping alliances in structuring of the world-economy and their contribution to spatio-temporally uneven development of capitalism.

Vyacheslav is associated doctoral fellow at Max-Weber-Kolleg, Erfurt, and an associate member of the sub-project JRT02 "Clash or Convergence of Capitalisms: Property Conflicts over Chinese Direct Investments in Germany and the European Union" of the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 294 "Structural Change of Property". His research interests include world-systems analysis, economic sociology and theory of uneven development.
